UP End Hate

UP End Hate is a national community awareness campaign that equips young people ages 12-22 with the resources and skills to prevent hate-fueled violence in their communities. UP End Hate aims to empower youth by providing the tools and training they need to prevent hate-based violence and create safer, more inclusive communities.

UP End Hate addresses the urgent need for youth-focused violence prevention tools in both online and offline spaces. With hate-based violence continuing to rise and mass shooters trending younger, UP End Hate fills a critical gap in the resources available for young people to intervene and prevent violence before it escalates.

Eradicate Hate ran an initial UP End Hate pilot program in collaboration with Community Matters, Moonshot, and The Reilly Group The project was initially funded by a Department of Homeland Security Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention (TVTP) Grant.

In its first year, UP End Hate launched a website of comprehensive resources, receiving over 33,000 visitors with 92% of viewers finding the content useful, targeted ad campaigns on YouTube and Reddit received 6.2 million impressions and helped drive traffic to the website, and 334 students from middle and high schools nationwide completed upstander trainings with Community Matters’ Safe School Ambassadors (SSA) program. Two students who participated in the training promptly reported seeing a gun in a fellow student’s backpack, averting a potential attack.

In the words of one of our SSA school administrators, “The SSA Program gives teachers a foundation to assist students in learning how to help create a safe environment where all students are seen as equals.”

Online Resources

The comprehensive UP End Hate website teaches young people to recognize warning signs, speak up when they see them, and seek help for peers who may be at risk. Visitors to the website can also learn about the nature of hate-fueled violence, become a certified UPstander, and find peer-to-peer support resources for various online and offline scenarios that young people may encounter. Additionally, free downloadable student toolkits are available on the UP End Hate website to help schools and campuses raise awareness and enable youth to launch their own local campaigns.

The UP End Hate website is anonymous and fully accessible to the public. The website does not collect any personally identifiable information, ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for young people to access the help they need.

In-Person Training

In addition to online training on the campaign website, UP End Hate also offers in-person training at middle schools and high schools across the United States. During the 2024-2025 academic year, through an adapted version of Community Matters Safe School Ambassadors Program, approximately 300 students were trained to stand up to prevent acts of hate, aggression, and mistreatment in their schools. Using the UP End Hate toolkit, Ambassadors shared the campaign’s message and resources with their peers.

For Youth, By Youth

UP End Hate’s Youth Advisory Council, composed of 20 members representative of America’s youth from across the country, provided critical input throughout the project’s design and pilot phase. Council members’ perspectives were instrumental in shaping the content, messaging, and resources to resonate with a youth audience.

As UP End Hate’s reach continues to grow, UP End Hate will also expand the Eradicate Hate Prevention Practitioners Network to include youth-led organizations, ensuring youth voice is part of nationwide efforts to build a comprehensive public health approach to preventing hate-based violence.
